The app Ive gifted the most, by far, is Superhuman Mail

3 REASONS (apparently controversial):

controversial because:

A) on paper Superhuman is a bad business idea.
Its a Gmail/Outlook wrapper with a little bit of AI and some keyboard shortcuts. Any VC would have killed this idea at launch with "what stops Google or Microsoft from just building this?" (answer: incentives!)

B) friends I refer generally dont end up using it lol.
Of the ~15 ppl Ive gifted subscriptions to, majority have told me they didnt end up like it (too much going on, they liked Gmail / Outlook / AOL or whatever archaic client they were used to)

AND YET... I love it, because:

1/ the UX is BEAUTIFUL
It genuinely saves me 5+ hours per week. I hated email. but I like using superhuman to send emails. keyboard shortcuts, snippets, scheduler, reminders; they make it fun and easy

2/ its OPINIONATED
they didnt build it for everyone (thats okay!)- they build it for tech-forward founder-oriented productivity-gremlins like me. Gmail is built for the 95%

3/ they CARE
this matters. they listen obsessively and it shows. every feature and demo gets a real reply. many of them actually ship (ex: MCP server!) its inspiring

THE TAKEAWAY———

to win you dont need:
> 10+ yrs experience in the space
> a proprietary data moat
> strategic partnerships
> an urgent 'why now!'
> a $10B TAM
> to worry about platform risk

you can literally just
> build something ppl want
> build it really well
> ship improvements fast
> care / listen obsessively
> say ok with not appealing to everyone
